In support of
World AIDS Day, we're asking all to take a moment to recognize this deadly disease that has claimed the lives of so many. Stemming as far back as 1959 when the earliest known case of infection with HIV-1 in a human was detected in a blood sample collected from a man in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It emerged in the United States in the mid-to late 1970's. It dominated the 80's and lulled many into a false sense of security through ignorance and miseducation that it was a gay man's disease. As it continued crossing racial, social and economic borders with its wicked intrusion, the falsehoods had to be eradicated! Now with major advancements through research, education and awareness, a once, most certain death sentence to the receipent finds many people living full and prosperous lives.
World AIDS Day is about raising money, increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education to stop this disease in its tracks!
According to UNAIDS:
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS estimates, there are now 33.3 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children. During 2009 some 2.6 million people became newly infected with the virus and an estimated 1.8 million people died from AIDS. Mainly impacting the lives of minority and low income communities. So as this day draws to a close your awareness should not! Get tested, know your status and practice safe sex!
